The Aguirre surname originated in one the Basque provinces, on the west coast of Spain. Many Aguirre's participated in the colonization of lands for the King of Spain. Many "conquistadores" on these sea voyages were Basque merchants and traders. The Basque people were known to have built most of the ships for the King of Spain. They were also recognized for their expert map-making and were among the first to sail around the world.
